Perched on a hill about 400 meters above sea level, Basciano offers its visitors a panoramic view of the Vomano river valley and the majestic peaks of the Gran Sasso. The main road that crosses it divides the town into two parts: the north-west section, older and in line with the morphology of the territory, and the south-east part, of more recent development, the result of careful urban planning. The origins of Basciano date back to ancient times, with evidence of human settlements dating back to theAge of the Bronze and Iron Ages, attested by the discovery of three necropolises from the 9th century BC, in the plain at the confluence of the Mavone and Vomano. In the same plain, in the locality of S. Rustico, a “vicus” flourished in the Italic and then Roman eras, an important commercial centre located along the “Via Salaria”, as evidenced by a temple and some Latin epigraphs. The first documented mention of Basciano dates back to the time of the abbot Giosuè (792-817), when it is mentioned in a list of assets belonging to the Monastery of S. Vincenzo al Volturno. There is information on the fiefdom of Basciano starting from the 12th century, when it appears among the possessions of Oderisio di Collepietro of the family of the Lords of Pagliara. The fiefdom passed then into the hands of the Acquaviva (Dukes of Atri), who held it until 1538, when it was sold to the de Scorciatis, a noble Neapolitan family; in 1700 it was purchased by the Avellone, who finally sold it to their nephew of the Barra-Caracciolo family, the last holders of the fiefdom of Basciano. The coat of arms of the Municipality of Basciano features a bearded and armed figure, dressed in orientalizing style clothes, accompanied by a crescent moon in the top right: an image traditionally interpreted as the representation of a Saracen, testifying to the Saracen raids suffered by the Vomano valley in the early Middle Ages. Of the medieval castle, only the ancient village remains with the entrance gate that has a splayed round arch from the 15th century, and above which stands the Clock Tower. Going up towards the street of Porta Penta is the Monument to the Emigrant, a symbol of memory and gratitude towards those who left their homeland in search of a better future. Next is the Church of S. Flaviano, mentioned since 1489 and restored in 1582, as attested by the dedicatory epigraph engraved on the portal. The brick façade is crowned by three pyramidal pinnacles, a motif that is also repeated on the bell gable located at the back of the building. The white stone portal has a Renaissance travertine frame decorated with moldings and rosettes, while the tympanum is supported by two brackets decorated with acanthus leaves. On the occasion of the Jubilee of 2000 the building was embellished with a door with bronze high reliefs, the work of the Urbino sculptor Augusto Ranocchi. Inside, the simplicity of the monochrome plaster enhances the purity of the architectural forms, with vaults and arches interrupted only by the windows with decorated polychrome glass, designed by Luca Luchetti. In the presbytery, the wooden choir and the high altar stand out, flanked by two 16th-century paintings depicting San Flaviano and San Rocco, framed by Baroque stucco; while in the side chapels there are late Renaissance frescoes (Crucifixion and Saints), the wooden bust of St. Flaviano and the statues of the Madonna del Carmelo and St. Lucia.

The buildings in the village are mostly from the 19th century, with some older constructions: in the highest part stands the “Baronial Palace”, now a private residence, which preserves the old cellars and the ruins of the watchtower. In the more modern sector, the large Piazza Vittorio Emanuele represents the heart of the social and economic life of the town, with the parish house and the medieval church of S. Giacomo. In the hamlet of the same name is the Church of Sant’Agostino, whose façade bears the coat of arms of the Camaldolese monks, who practiced the “cure of souls” there from the late Middle Ages until 1806. Inside the church there is a valuable canvas depicting the Madonna with Child and Saints. In Villa Portone there is the rural church of the Madonna delle Grazie from the 17th century, with an original “distaff” of the Virgin. Finally, you cannot miss a visit to the Church of Santa Maria a Porto Lungo, which represents a valuable example of Romanesque architecture and of which there is evidence since 1269. Situated in a dominant position on the hill of the same name, its sober and elegant structure blends harmoniously with the surrounding landscape. The building has a single nave plan, with a semicircular apse that recalls Romanesque stylistic canons, and is characterised by a beautiful majolica ceiling, sixteenth-century frescoes and the splendid wooden altar commissioned by the de Scorciatis family in 1646. During the year, the town comes alive with religious celebrations and festivals that attract residents and visitors from all over the region. Among the most important events are the Majolica Cathedral, the Palazzo del Popolo and the Palazzo del Popolo. significant are the “Bascialonga” which takes place in June, and the Festa della Madonna del Carmelo, patron saint of Basciano, celebrated on July 16 with a solemn mass and a suggestive procession through the streets of the village. The summer in Basciano is enriched by highly attractive events, such as the Sagra del Prosciutto Abruzzese and the Festival dell’Organetto “Ddu’ Botte”, which are held every second week of August and celebrate one of the local culinary excellences, together with the popular musical tradition. You can’t miss it!
